Construction has been halted at the site of the city’s downtown sports
and entertainment centre while provincial inspectors look into an
accident that sent a labourer to hospital this morning.
Kingston Police Const. Ed Cunningham said a worker fractured both of
his ankles after falling about eight metres when a steel beam gave way
around 11:15 a.m.
“He was lucky,” said Cunningham. “It seems he came down on top of the
beam as opposed to the beam coming down on top of him.”
Doctors are performing x-rays, but Cunningham said they think the man
is all right.
The Ministry of Labour closed the site while they investigate the cause
of the fallen beam.
“They’re waiting for a structural engineer to come,” he said.
